Battery warning light on while driving? What it means
The short answer
That red battery light coming on while the engine is running almost never means a flat battery on its own. It means the car has stopped charging, so it's running off whatever is left in the battery and could cut out. Head somewhere safe, switch off anything you don't need, and get the charging system checked rather than carrying on for miles.
It's easy to read the battery symbol as just needing a new battery, but while you're driving it points at the charging side of things. The alternator is meant to keep the battery topped up and power the car once it's running. When that light stays on, something in that loop has failed, and the battery will only run down from there.
Common causes and what they mean
A few things could be behind it. Here's what each usually points to, and how serious it is.
Failing alternator
The most common one. The alternator charges the battery and runs the car once it's started. When it stops charging, the battery drains and the light comes on. This is auto electrics rather than a simple battery swap.
Slipping or broken auxiliary belt
The alternator is driven by a belt. If that belt is loose, glazed or snapped it can't spin the alternator, so charging stops. A snapped belt often kills the water pump too, so the car can overheat as well.
Worn or loose wiring and connections
A corroded earth, a loose main lead or a failed charging cable can stop the alternator's output reaching the battery even when the alternator itself is fine. It needs testing to pin down.
A genuinely worn-out battery
An old battery that can no longer hold charge can trigger the light and leave the alternator working flat out. The battery and the charging system are two different parts, so it's worth testing both before replacing anything.
Voltage regulator fault
The regulator controls how much the alternator charges. If it fails, the car can under-charge or over-charge, and either one will bring the warning light on.
Can I keep driving with the battery light on?
Not far. Once that light is on the car is running off the battery alone, and when that runs down the engine will cut out. When it does you lose the power steering and the brake servo with it, often with no warning. Turn off the heated screen, radio, aircon and anything else you don't need, drive to a safe place or home if it's close, and get it checked. If the light came on with a squealing noise, a hot smell or the temperature gauge climbing, that points at the belt, so stop and switch off before you overheat the engine.
