Clutch Replacement: Honest Assessment & Fixed Quote
Slipping, juddering or a heavy pedal? We come out across Soham, Ely, Newmarket and Cambridgeshire, work out what's actually wrong, and give you a fixed quote. All makes and models, no obligation.
A clutch is what lets you pull away smoothly and change gear. Over the miles the friction plate wears down, much like a brake pad, until it starts to slip, drag or bite oddly. Left too long, a worn clutch can leave you stuck, so it's worth getting it looked at as soon as it starts playing up. The tricky part is the diagnosis: a slipping clutch, a leaking hydraulic cylinder and a worn release bearing can all feel similar from the driver's seat, but they cost very different amounts to put right.
That's where we come in. We drive out to your home or work across Soham, Ely, Newmarket, Cambridge and the villages around them, check the car properly, and tell you honestly what it needs and what it will cost. Being straight with you: swapping a clutch is a big strip-down job. On many cars the fit itself is better done on a ramp in a workshop rather than on a driveway, so this is a quote-led service, not an instant driveway booking.
A proper diagnosis first
We check whether it's really the clutch, or the hydraulics, release bearing or a linkage. Getting that right is what stops you paying for the wrong repair.
A fixed quote by car
Clutch parts and labour vary a lot by make and model, so once we've seen it you get one clear all-in price, agreed before any work starts.
An honest mobile-or-workshop call
Some cars we can do at your place; most clutches are better on a ramp. We tell you which yours is up front, and line up a trusted partner garage for the fit if that's what yours needs.
Quality parts, whole job done
A clutch is usually replaced as a full kit (plate, cover and bearing), and we advise on the flywheel while we're in there, so it's done once and done right.
Is replacing a clutch worth it?
It's a bigger bill than most jobs, so it's a fair question. On a car that's otherwise sound, a new clutch is nearly always worth it against the alternatives:
It's the part that gets you moving
Once a clutch slips badly the car won't pull cleanly, and eventually won't drive at all. This isn't wear you can safely ignore for long.
Ignoring it can spread the damage
A clutch left to slip can overheat and score the flywheel, and dragging can wear the gearbox, turning one repair into two.
Cheaper than a new car
On a good, reliable car a clutch is a one-off cost that keeps a car you know on the road for years more.
Done once, done properly
Because it's a strip-down, we replace the wear parts together as a kit so you're not back in a few months for the bit that got left.

Signs your clutch is failing
Clutches wear gradually, so the signs creep in. Noticed any of these? It's worth getting it checked before it leaves you stranded. We'll come out, take a look and give you a straight quote.
The engine revs but the car doesn't speed up
Classic clutch slip. The worn plate can't grip, so power isn't reaching the wheels. Most obvious in a high gear or up a hill, and the clearest sign the clutch is on its way out.
A high or spongy biting point
If the clutch only bites right near the top of the pedal travel, the plate is worn thin. A soft or sinking pedal can instead point to a hydraulic leak, which is a different, often cheaper fix.
Juddering as you pull away
A shudder through the car when setting off can be a worn or contaminated clutch, often oil from a nearby leak on the friction surface. Worth checking early before it gets worse.
A burning smell after tricky driving
A hot, acrid smell after a hill start or heavy traffic is the clutch overheating as it slips. Regular burning means the clutch is struggling and getting close to the end.
Difficulty getting into gear
Crunching, or a fight to get into first or reverse, can mean the clutch isn't fully releasing. Sometimes it's the hydraulics or release bearing rather than the plate, which is why a proper check matters.
A heavy pedal or noise when pressed
A clutch pedal that's gone stiff, or a rumble or squeal that changes as you press it, often points to the release bearing or pressure plate. We'll pin down which it is.

- Make and model: clutch kit prices vary a lot by car
- The flywheel too, if it's worn (common on dual-mass setups)
- The clutch plate itself, or the hydraulics or release bearing
- How much strip-down the car's layout needs to reach the clutch
- Fit at yours where practical, or a partner garage with a ramp where it isn't
Every bit as good as a garage
Same tools, same quality parts, same standard, done at your home or work instead of a workshop. Where a job genuinely needs a ramp we'll tell you straight, but most of what a garage does, we do on your driveway.
