Mobile mechanic vs garage: are they any good?
Short answer: for most car work, a mobile mechanic is every bit as good as a garage, and usually cheaper and more convenient. Here's the honest breakdown, including the handful of jobs where a garage still wins.
The honest verdict
For the servicing and repairs most drivers actually need, a qualified mobile mechanic is just as good as a garage. Same diagnostic kit, same quality parts, same manufacturer schedules. The only real difference is that the work comes to your driveway instead of you driving to a workshop and losing a day.
A garage still makes sense for a small number of jobs: the heavy strip-downs that need a ramp, like major engine or gearbox rebuilds, and the MOT test itself, which by law has to happen at an approved test centre. For everything else, mobile is quicker, usually cheaper, and every bit as thorough. We'll always tell you straight which camp your job falls into.
Mobile mechanic vs garage, side by side
How the two stack up on the things that actually matter when your car needs work.
| What matters | Mobile mechanic | Garage |
|---|---|---|
| Where it happens | Your home, work or the roadside | You drop the car off and collect it |
| Your day | Carry on as normal while we work | Lose a day, arrange a lift or courtesy car |
| Cost | Lower overheads, no padded hourly labour | Workshop and forecourt costs in the bill |
| Availability | Same-day and evenings, most weeks | Often booked days ahead, weekdays only |
| Price up front | Published and agreed before we start | Frequently quote-only until they've seen it |
| Servicing, brakes, battery, diagnostics | Yes, same tools, parts and standard | Yes |
| Big strip-downs (engine or gearbox rebuilds) | Referred to a trusted workshop | Yes, on a ramp |
| The MOT test itself | We prep and repair, but can't issue the certificate | Only if it's an approved test centre |
What we do at your driveway
The everyday jobs most cars need are all mobile, done to the same standard as a workshop:
- Full, interim and major servicing
- Diagnostics and fault finding
- Brakes: pads, discs and fluid
- Batteries and auto-electrical
- Air-con regas
- DPF and EGR cleaning
- Oil and fluid changes
- Pre-MOT checks and repairs
When a garage is the better call
We'd rather be honest than take on a job that can't be done properly on a driveway:
- Major engine or gearbox rebuilds that need a ramp and lifting gear
- The MOT test itself, which legally needs an approved test centre
- Some clutch and cambelt work, depending on the car
- Bodywork, welding and heavy structural repairs
When your job is one of these, we'll tell you and point you to a trusted workshop.
