Check engine light on? What it means and what to do
The short answer
The check engine light means the car has stored a fault in the engine or emissions system. In the UK it's the same warning most cars label the engine management light, just a different name for the little orange engine symbol. A steady light with the car driving normally is usually safe for a short trip, but get it read soon. A flashing light, or rough running and lost power, means stop and get it checked before you cause more damage.
"Check engine" is the wording you'll see on a lot of imports and newer cars, and it's exactly the same warning as the engine management light on a UK-spec dash. Either way, the light only tells you a code has been stored, not what the fault actually is. The only way to know is to plug in and read it.
Common causes and what they mean
A few things could be behind it. Here's what each usually points to, and how serious it is.
Faulty or worn sensor
Oxygen and airflow sensors are among the most common triggers. Often an inexpensive fix once the code points you to the right one.
Misfire
A worn spark plug, coil or injector making the engine run unevenly. You'll usually feel it as a stumble, and it often shows as a flashing light.
Emissions fault (EGR or DPF)
A clogged EGR valve or a blocked diesel particulate filter will light the warning and often drop the car into limp mode with reduced power.
Loose or faulty fuel cap
A cap that isn't sealing lets the system read a small leak and stores an emissions code. Worth checking it's clicked shut before you worry about anything bigger.
Air or vacuum leak
An unmetered air leak throws the fuel mixture off and logs a fault. It needs testing to trace the split hose or leaking gasket.
Can I still drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car feels and sounds normal, a short drive home or to us is usually fine, but don't leave it running for weeks. If the light is flashing, or the car is juddering, losing power or has gone into limp mode, stop as soon as it's safe and get it checked. Carrying on with a flashing light can wreck the catalytic converter and turn a small repair into a big one.
