Engine management light on? What it means and what to do
The short answer
The engine management light means the car's computer has logged a fault somewhere in the engine or emissions system. If the light is steady orange and the car drives normally, it's usually safe to get home or to us, but it should be read soon. If it's flashing, or the car is running rough or losing power, stop driving and get it checked, as you could be doing more damage.
The light on its own doesn't tell you the actual fault, only that the car has stored a code for one. The job is to plug in, read that code, and work out what's really wrong, because a dozen very different faults can all trigger the same light.
Common causes and what they mean
A few things could be behind it. Here's what each usually points to, and how serious it is.
Faulty or worn sensor
Oxygen, mass-airflow and other sensors are common triggers. Often a cheap fix once it's pinpointed.
Misfire
A tired spark plug, coil or injector making the engine run unevenly. Usually felt as a stumble or a flashing light.
Emissions fault (EGR or DPF)
A blocked EGR valve or DPF on a diesel will light the engine light and often knock the power back.
Loose or faulty fuel cap
A cap that isn't sealing can throw an emissions code. Worth checking it's clicked tight before anything else.
Air or vacuum leak
An unmetered air leak upsets the fuel mixture and stores a fault. Needs testing to find the split hose or gasket.
Can I still drive with it on?
A steady orange light with the car driving normally is usually fine for a short drive home or to us, but don't leave it for weeks. A flashing light, or the car juddering, lacking power or in limp mode, means stop as soon as it's safe and get it looked at, because driving on can turn a small fix into an expensive one.
